Patient dies after MTP at 26 weeks: NCDRC slaps Rs.1 crore compensation on Moolchand Hospital, gynecologists

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission recently held Shri MoolChand Khairati Ram Hospital and Ayurvedic Research Institute and its Gynecologist guilty of medical negligence for conducting Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) during the 26th week of pregnancy of a patient, who died during the procedure in 2003.

Although the top consumer court noted that the patient and her relatives wished for the abortion due to possible abnormalities of the fetus, it observed that “Even if the patient or her attendants or relations were insisting on medical termination of pregnancy, the hospital was bound by the provisions of the MTP Act, 1971 and ought not to have undertaken termination at the 26th / 28th weeks of pregnancy.”

Rs. 100 per day stipend: MBBS interns of Lata Mangeshkar Hospital stage protest

Terming Rs 100 per day stipend as “insulting”, around 140 MBBS interns belonging to Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, Nagpur (LMH) and NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences have resorted to strike from Monday.

The doctors, who have withdrawn their services and opted for peaceful sit-in-dharna to raise their voice, are demanding a “respectable stipend” since they are claiming that their present stipend of Rs 3000 per month is lower than the salary paid to the daily wage workers and unskilled labourers.

An hour after the Food Safety and Standard Authority of Indian (FSSAI) officers shut down the hostel mess at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi because of several irregularities and unhygienic conditions, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) alleged that the administration reopened the mess without taking any measures to deal with the problems.

Magic mushrooms likely to be world’s most effective tool against depression

These are the findings of a new analysis of brain scans from close to 60 people receiving treatment for depression, led by Imperial College London’s Centre for Psychedelic Research. The team behind the study believes it may have untangled how psilocybin exerts its therapeutic effects on the brain.

Psilocybin is one of a number of psychedelics being explored as a potential therapy for psychiatric disorders. Several studies have trialled a synthesised form of the drug to treat patients with depression and anxiety, with promising results.
