Supreme Court prompts states to follow NMC standards while setting up government medical colleges

The Supreme Court has recently held that States are bound to adhere to the standards prescribed by National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding infrastructural facilities, faculty etc. while setting up new government medical colleges in the respective States.

This observation was made in respect of the three States- Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, which had challenged the decision of the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI), now NMC denying to issue Letters of Permission to eight colleges with an intake capacity of 800 MBBS seats.

Union Health Ministry organises “Cycle for Health” rally

AI won’t replace doctors, human touch still needed in healthcare

The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare can enhance the quality of clinical decision-making, but it won’t replace doctors as “codes cannot cure” and human touch is needed for holistic patient care, a top official of a leading healthcare group said on Monday.

Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, Sangita Reddy, in an exclusive interaction with PTI, on the sidelines of an international conference here, however, cautioned that in a rapidly evolving world driven by cutting-edge technology, “doctors who use artificial intelligence (AI) may replace doctors who do not”.

Odisha to set up 4 new medical colleges, upgrade 147 hospitals

The Odisha government will set up four new medical colleges and upgrade 147 hospitals under ‘Ama Hospital’ programme besides developing a state of art cancer care institute, a senior health department official said on Tuesday.

This was stated by Health and Family Welfare secretary Shalini Pandit while speaking at the two-day collectors conference which commenced here on Tuesday.
