Cardiologist Dr Mohan Nair no more

New Delhi: Renowned Cardiologist Dr Mohan Nair has passed away. Dr Nair, who was one of the most prominent Interventional Electrophysiologists in India, had more than 36 years of experience treating all types of cardiac ailments.

According to sources, he was alright till yesterday evening and was found dead at his residence around 11 AM. He is presumed to have had a massive ?myocardial infarction.

His expertise was in Interventional Cardiology and Interventional Electrophysiology including Complex ablation procedures under 3D mapping.

Dr (Prof) Nair’s work experience in interventional cardiology includes over 5000 coronary angioplasty procedures and 300 balloon mitral valvuloplasties. Experience in Electrophysiology includes nearly 3500 diagnostic EP procedures and 2500 radiofrequency catheter ablations. This placed him among the top 10 interventional cardiologists in India and ranked him as one of the leading electrophysiologists of South Asia.

His research activities led to more than 100 publications and paper presentations at the national as well as international levels. In addition, he was involved in setting up of EP programs in various hospitals and institutions in India, China and Sri Lanka including Apollo Hospitals, Chennai; Nizam’s Institute, Hyderabad, JIPMER, Pondicherry, Sri Chitra Institute, Trivandrum and several others.

He had been on the faculty of almost all major national and International EP meetings in the past 5 years. He also had been on the faculty of live physician education program on Angioplasty and Electrophysiology in France, Sri Lanka and in China. He was in the forefront of Pacing and Defibrillator therapy in India and currently designated proctor for Atrio Biventricular Pacing in this country.

He completed his MBBS in 1980, MD Medicine in 1984 and DM Cardiology in 1987 from Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), University of Delhi. He did Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology from University Hospital, Rouen, France.

With over 36 years of experience, he served as Professor of Cardiology at GB Pant Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College, Chief of Cardiology and Director-Electrophysiology at Max Hospital, New Delhi, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences at Saket City Hospital, New Delhi, Chief of Cardiology at St Stephens Hospital, Tis Hazaari, Delhi and Director & Head of Cardiology at the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences.

His achievements also include: Dr AK Dutta Memmorial Oration: Cardiological Society of India – 2006, Dr. Handy Memorial Cardiology Oration, Ceylon College of Physician’s, 2001, Invited Guest Speaker, Annual Conference of Ceylon College of Physicians: 2004, Invited Guest Speaker, 7th Annual Congress of the Sri Lankan Heart Association, 2006, 2018, Course Director, First National Congress on Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Sept’98, New Delhi, India, Course Director- South Asia EP Training Program, Conducted in India since 1999, Member, International Advisory Board, 2nd Asian Pacific Congress on Atrial Fibrillation- Tokyo, 2006, Honorary Fellow, Ceylon College of Physicians, Member International Scientific Advisory Board, Cardio rhythm, Hong Kong 2011 and Course Director, Animal Simulation training course, University of Medical Sciences, Hong Kong, 2011.

In 2019, he was awarded Augustine Castellano Outstanding Career Achievement Award; Given by HE Prince Albert II, the Monarch of Monaco, Monte Carlo 2019.

Dr Nair was a member of the Delhi Medical Council and also served as a member of the Cardiological Society of India, the Indian Heart Rhythm Society and the Indian Medical Association.
